Cool-season (fescue, KBG, rye) care calendar

Tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass. Two growth flushes: spring and fall. Fall is your make-or-break month — seed, feed, and set up next year.

Mowing height
3"–4"
N per season
2–4 lb / 1,000 sq ft (fall-loaded)
Peak growth
Soil 50–65°F (spring & fall)
Summer strategy
Survive, don't push
Jan
winter
Dormant-ish.
  • Sharpen mower blade
Ragged tips = fungal entry points in spring.
  • Soil test
    Cool-season loves 6.0–7.0 pH.
Feb
winter
Late-winter prep.
  • Order pre-emergent
Prodiamine or dithiopyr for crabgrass. Split app — half now, half in 8 weeks.
Mar
spring
Pre-emergent window.
  • Apply pre-emergent
Soil 2" at 50–55°F. Miss this and you fight crabgrass all summer.
  • Skip if seeding
Pre-emergent blocks new grass seed too. Use Tenacity + reseed if patching bare areas.
Apr
spring
First feed.
  • Light N
0.5–0.75 lb N / 1,000 sq ft. Fall does the heavy lifting for cool-season — go easy in spring.
  • Post-emergent for broadleaf
Dandelion, clover, henbit. 3-way herbicides work well when temps stay under 85°F.
May
spring
Peak growth — mow, mow, mow.
  • Mow every 4–5 days
Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade.
  • Second pre-emergent split
    Extends crabgrass protection into summer.
  • Optional iron
Color without pushing growth into the summer heat.
Jun
summer
Ease off.
  • No nitrogen
Feeding cool-season in June/July invites brown patch and thin summer stress.
  • Raise mowing height
    3.5–4". Shades soil, reduces stress.
  • Deep, infrequent water
1" per week including rain, in 1–2 sessions.
Jul
summer
Survival mode.
  • Watch for brown patch
Circular tan patches during humid nights. Azoxystrobin or propiconazole.
  • Grub check
Peak egg-laying window. Preventative (chlorantraniliprole) if you've had past damage.
  • No fertilizer, no herbicide
    Heat + chemical = damage.
Aug
summer
Plan the fall renovation.
  • Order seed
Turf-type tall fescue, KBG, or your existing blend.
  • Scout weeds & bare spots
Photo your lawn now — you'll forget by seeding time.
Sep
fall
The most important month.
  • Overseed
Best window Sept 1–30. Rake, seed, topdress, water 2–3× daily until germination.
  • Starter fertilizer
Phosphorus-forward at seeding. Skip if soil P is already high.
  • Skip pre-emergent
Kills new seed. Use Tenacity (mesotrione) at seeding — it IS pre-emergent + safe on new grass.
Oct
fall
Feed hard.
  • Heavy N application
1 lb N / 1,000 sq ft. Cool-season builds roots now — this is the year's most important feed.
  • Broadleaf cleanup
Cool temps + slow-growing weeds = herbicides work great.
  • Aerate + topdress
Late September or early October — before growth slows.
Nov
fall
Winterizer.
  • Final N (winterizer)
0.75–1 lb N right before the last mow. Feeds roots through winter.
  • Rake or mulch leaves
Smothered turf thins out over winter.
Dec
winter
Rest.
  • Final mow at 3"
Slightly shorter than summer, but never scalp.
  • Plan next year
Note what worked and what didn't while it's fresh.

Fall is 80% of a great cool-season lawn. If you only nail one season — nail September–November.
